Door to airport — the most affordable way to ship personal effects overseas

How door to airport works

Door to airport shipping means we collect your personal effects, bags, suitcases, and boxes from your UK address and ship them by air cargo to your destination airport — where you or your authorised representative collect them from the airport cargo terminal or customs warehouse. It is the most cost-effective air freight option for personal effects, removing the cost of last-mile delivery in the destination country.

Door to airport is the standard delivery model for many destinations — particularly across Africa, parts of Asia, and the Middle East — where personal effects customs clearance is handled by the consignee at the arrival airport rather than delivered to the door by a courier. We prepare all UK export documentation and air waybill, and advise you precisely what to do on arrival at your destination airport.

Door to airport vs door to door — which service do you need?

Most affordable

Door to Airport

  • Cost: Lower than door-to-door (subject to your destination) — no last-mile delivery at destination
  • How it works: We collect from your UK address, ship by air cargo to destination airport. You or your agent collect at the airport cargo terminal.
  • Best for: Destinations where airport collection is standard (West Africa, parts of Asia, Middle East); when cost is a priority; when you have a trusted local contact who can collect
  • Documentation at collection: You need your passport and the original Air Waybill (AWB) to collect at the destination airport
  • Storage charge warning: Most airports charge storage after 24-48 hours — collect promptly
Most convenient

Door to Door

  • Cost: Higher than door-to-airport — includes last-mile delivery to your address
  • How it works: We collect from your UK address and deliver directly to your destination address — no airport collection required
  • Best for: Destinations with strong last-mile delivery infrastructure (USA, Canada, Australia, Europe, UAE); when convenience matters more than cost; when you cannot attend an airport in person
  • Available to: Most major destinations — check our destination pages for door-to-door (subject to your destination) availability
  • Customs: We arrange destination customs clearance as part of the service

What happens at the destination airport — step by step

  1. We notify you when goods arrive

Once your personal effects arrive at the destination airport and are ready for collection, we notify you with the Air Waybill (AWB) number and the cargo terminal details. Some airlines also send an arrival notice direct to you as the consignee.

  2. Attend the cargo terminal promptly

Go to the cargo terminal at the destination airport — not the passenger terminal. Cargo terminals are separate facilities, typically on the airport perimeter. Bring your passport and the original Air Waybill. Do not delay — most airports charge storage fees after 24-48 hours.

  3. Present your documents to customs

Present your passport, original Air Waybill, and packing list to the customs officer. For personal effects, you will be assessed under the personal effects relief provisions of the destination country. Accurate packing lists and declared values speed up clearance significantly.

  4. Pay any applicable duty

Most countries offer personal effects relief for relocating residents — duty may be minimal or zero. Where duty applies, it is assessed on the declared value of the goods. Our packing list format is specifically designed to support duty-free clearance where eligible.

  5. Collect your personal effects

Once customs is satisfied, you collect your bags, boxes, or suitcases from the cargo warehouse. You may need transport — a van or taxi — as cargo terminals are separate from passenger areas and goods can be bulky.

Common questions answered

What is door to airport shipping for personal effects?+
Door to airport means we collect your personal effects from your UK address and ship them by air cargo to your destination airport, where you or your authorised representative collect them from the airport cargo terminal. It is more affordable than door-to-door (subject to your destination) shipping because it removes the cost of last-mile delivery in the destination country.
How do I collect my personal effects at the destination airport?+
Go to the cargo terminal at the destination airport — this is a separate facility from the passenger terminal. Bring your original passport and the Air Waybill (AWB) we provided. Present these to customs, complete any customs clearance process, and collect your goods from the cargo warehouse. Most airports charge storage fees after 24-48 hours so collect promptly.
Is door to airport cheaper than door to door personal effects shipping?+
Yes. Door to airport is consistently cheaper than door-to-door (subject to your destination) personal effects shipping because the cost of last-mile delivery in the destination country is removed. For destinations where airport collection is standard — such as Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and Jamaica — door to airport is the natural and most cost-effective choice.
Which destinations use door to airport for personal effects?+
Door to airport is the standard collection model for personal effects shipped to Nigeria (Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt), Ghana (Accra), Kenya (Nairobi), Jamaica (Kingston), Bangladesh (Dhaka, Sylhet), and many other African and Caribbean destinations. Some of these destinations also offer door-to-door (subject to your destination) at an additional cost. We advise at booking for your specific destination.
What documents do I need to collect my personal effects at the airport?+
You need your original passport and the original Air Waybill (AWB) prepared by Excess Luggage Co. Some countries also require proof of residency or a visa to claim personal effects duty-free relief. We advise on the specific documents required for your destination at the time of booking.
How long does door to airport personal effects shipping take from the UK?+
