These are real questions we have been asked by people shipping luggage, boxes and personal effects from the UK — from Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff, Leeds and London — over more than 25 years. We answer them straight.
That includes the honest answers. Sometimes paying your airline for an extra bag works out cheaper than shipping, and when it does, we will tell you. We would rather give you the right answer than the one that sells a booking.

Choosing a company
How do I choose a luggage shipping company?+
Look past the headline price for a moment and check how the company actually works. Do they collect from your door themselves, or just book a courier? Do they run their own warehouse, or are they a website that passes your booking to someone else? Are they near Heathrow, where most long-haul freight leaves the UK? Will they explain destination charges honestly and help with the customs paperwork, rather than leave you to it? And how long have they been trading? A genuine freight company answers all of that plainly. For the record: we collect across mainland Britain, run our own warehouse two miles from Heathrow cargo, handle the customs side, and have been shipping luggage and personal effects since 1998.
How can I find a luggage shipping company near me?+
With outbound shipping, “near me” matters less than you would think — because whoever you use, your bags have to reach an international gateway, and for the UK that is usually Heathrow. We collect from anywhere in mainland Britain by courier and bring everything to our own warehouse beside Heathrow, so you do not need a shipper on your doorstep. You need one who covers your area and controls the freight from there. We do both.
Are there overseas baggage shipping companies near me?+
You will not find one on your high street — unaccompanied, overseas baggage shipping is a specialist freight service, not a shop. What you actually want is a company that covers your area for collection and controls the export side from the airport. We collect from any mainland UK address by courier and consolidate at our own warehouse beside Heathrow, so wherever you are in Britain, you are covered.
International luggage shipping companies near me — does my location matter?+
For an international move, your location decides the collection leg, not the shipping itself. Whoever you use, long-haul freight leaves the UK through a gateway, and for most destinations that is Heathrow. So the useful question is not who is nearest you, but who collects from your area and runs the airport side properly. We do both — nationwide door collection and our own warehouse two miles from Heathrow cargo.
Is it a booking platform or an actual freight company — how can I tell?+
Ask one question: who physically handles my bags? A booking platform takes your order online and hands it to a third-party carrier — no warehouse, no direct control, and often no one to call when something is unusual. An actual freight company collects, checks, packs where needed, prepares the airline paperwork and loads the shipment itself. We are the second kind — our own warehouse, our own team, a freephone number, and 40 years in the trade.
How do I know a luggage shipping company is genuine?+
Check the basics anyone real will have: a registered company number, a VAT number, a physical address rather than just a web form, a phone number a person answers, and clear written terms. Then look for a track record. For the record, we are Excess Luggage Ltd, company no. 04151003, VAT GB 799 9832 28, at MetEx House in Hounslow, on 0800 096 38 39 — trading since 1998.
Moving abroad
I’m moving abroad — how do I send my belongings?+
What you are sending is “personal effects”, and it is routine for us. You tell us roughly what you have — suitcases, boxes, perhaps a few items of furniture — and where it is going. We collect from your UK address, you provide an itemised inventory with honest values for customs, and we ship by air (days) or sea (weeks) depending on volume and how quickly you need it. You do not have to be flying yourself, and you can send it before or after you travel.
Should I ship my belongings before I fly?+
Often, yes. Shipping ahead means you travel light and do not gamble your whole move on excess-baggage fees at the check-in desk. Allow enough lead time — air is usually a few working days from collection, sea is weeks — and remember your goods may need to clear customs at the other end, so arriving a little after you is normal. Tell us your travel date and we will work back from it.
Comparing your options
Air freight or sea freight — which should I choose?+
Air suits smaller, urgent shipments — a few bags and boxes needed within days. Sea suits large moves — lots of boxes or furniture — where you can wait a few weeks and want the lowest cost per kilo. As a rough rule, a handful of bags go by air; a household’s worth of belongings usually goes by sea. Tell us what you have and where it is going, and we will tell you honestly which makes sense.
What’s the difference between a luggage shipping company and a courier?+
A courier is built for parcels and documents in standard sizes, priced in small weight bands, and does not handle the customs side of a personal move. A specialist luggage shipping company handles suitcases, boxes and oversized items, prices them sensibly for what they are, prepares the export and customs paperwork, and knows the destination rules. For one small parcel, a courier is fine. For your bags, boxes or a move abroad, that is our job.
Is it safe, and what if something goes wrong?
Is luggage shipping safe?+
With a genuine operator, yes. Your shipment is handled through a real warehouse, prepared for airline security screening, documented properly and trackable, and you can insure it for its full value. The risks people actually hit are avoidable ones — misdeclaring contents, poor packing, or missing paperwork — and part of our job is to steer you clear of them before your bags leave the UK.
What happens if my luggage is lost or damaged?+
Genuine losses are rare when a shipment is packed and documented properly. If something does go wrong, carrier liability by air is set by international convention and calculated by weight, not by what an item cost — which usually falls short of the real value of personal belongings. That is why we recommend insuring your shipment for its actual value, so any claim reflects what you would pay to replace things. Tell us the value up front and we will arrange the cover.
