Ship or pay? • Honest comparison

Flying from Heathrow — ship your luggage or pay airline excess baggage?

The honest answer is it depends. Here’s how to work out which is cheaper for your trip.

The honest answer is: it depends. For some trips the airline’s excess-baggage charge is the cheaper, simpler choice. For others, shipping saves you a lot — and your back. Here’s how to work out which is you.

When paying the airline usually wins
One extra bag, short trip If you just have one bag over your allowance and you’re travelling short-haul, the airline’s per-bag fee is often simplest — and it travels with you.
You need it the moment you land If your things must be with you on arrival and there’s no time to ship ahead, checked baggage wins on timing.

Several bags or boxes Airlines charge premium rates per extra bag or per kilo. Once you’re past a bag or two — especially with boxes — shipping is typically cheaper per kilo.

Long-haul or moving abroad For long-haul routes and relocations, shipping (air for speed, sea for volume) is usually far more economical than airline excess, and you travel hands-free.
How to compare, honestly

Add up what your airline charges for the extra bags or kilos you’d check. Then get a shipping quote for the same load. Factor in that shipped luggage is collected from your door and you don’t haul it through two airports. If the airline is genuinely cheaper for your trip, we’ll say so — a ten-minute call usually settles it. With shipping, as long as your bags are what you told us, that’s the price you pay, subject to airline rates at the time of booking.

Quick answers
Is shipping always cheaper than airline excess baggage? +
No — and we won’t pretend it is. For one extra bag on a short flight the airline can win. For multiple bags, boxes, or long-haul moves, shipping usually wins. It depends on weight, count and destination.
Do I have to take my luggage to Heathrow myself? +
No. We collect from your home, office or university anywhere in the UK. You don’t bring anything to the airport.
Can I ship my suitcase before I fly and travel with just hand luggage? +
Yes — send it ahead and travel light. Just allow enough transit time for it to arrive when you need it.
