is for you if…

We’ve been solving the excess baggage problem since 1998

Most people contact us after seeing what the airline wants to charge for an extra bag. Others are moving abroad and need a better option than checking everything in. Some just want their bags to arrive without stress.

I’ve been at MetEx House in Hounslow — right next to Heathrow — since 1998. In those 28 years I’ve watched airline baggage allowances shrink and check-in fees climb. We’ve personally handled in that time.

Here is the honest truth about what we offer. Most of our customers ship by air freight. We collect their bags from their UK door and ship them to the arrival airport in 4–10 working days. You — as sender and receiver — clear customs on arrival and collect from the airport cargo warehouse. For personal effects, the sender and receiver must be the same person. It’s fast, reliable and — for two or more bags — usually cheaper than the airline would charge at the desk.

Some customers have a lot to send and no deadline. Sea freight is the answer for them. It takes longer — up to three months on a coload — but for someone moving permanently, the saving is substantial.

And some customers simply don’t want to deal with customs at the other end. That’s what our door-to-door (subject to your destination) service is for. We collect here, deliver to their door in Australia, the UAE or the USA, and handle customs clearance along the way. It costs more, but the complete absence of airport aggravation is worth it to many people.

Call us, tell us where you’re sending and how many bags. We will find you the right service with a written quote before we collect.

How we handle your luggage

“We collect your luggage ourselves. We check it is properly packed, wrapped and secured before it leaves your door. After 28 years we know what arrives safely and what doesn’t. That happens before the bag is in the air — not after.”

Lak Kharod — Director, Excess Luggage Co. Since 1998

Three ways to ship your excess baggage from the UK

The right choice depends on where you’re going, how much you have, when you need it there and how much you want handled for you. Here is an honest breakdown of all three.

✈ Air freight
Arrival airport collection
4–10
Working days from UK door collection

We collect from your UK door and ship as air cargo to the destination airport. You — as sender and receiver — clear customs on arrival and collect from the airport cargo warehouse. For personal effects, the sender and receiver must be the same person. Fast, straightforward and cheaper than most airline excess fees for two or more bags.

Available to
185 countries — Nigeria, Ghana, India, Pakistan, Jamaica, the Caribbean, Kenya, Middle East and beyond.
⚓ Sea freight
Arrival seaport collection
Up to 3
Months on a coload consolidation

If you have a lot to send and the timeline is flexible, sea freight is substantially more economical than air. Typically 3–12 weeks to destination depending on the route. You — as sender and receiver — attend customs and collect from the arrival seaport. The sender and receiver must be the same person for personal effects classification.

Available to
185 countries — Nigeria direct 20–21 days, Ghana 24–27 days, Caribbean 10–15 days, Africa and beyond.
🏠 Door-to-door
Delivered to your door abroad
No customs
Hassle — everything handled end to end

For customers who want nothing to do with customs at the other end. We collect from your UK door and deliver directly to your address in Australia, the UAE or the USA. By air via our express air partner/our express air partner or by sea. Complete from start to finish.

Prime routes
Australia • USA • UAE • Canada (customs restrictions apply) • Also New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong by sea.

What airlines charge at the airport — and what we charge instead

The figures below are what airlines typically charge at check-in or the gate on UK departure routes — often with no advance warning and no room to negotiate. We have put them here so you can compare directly. Our price is confirmed before we collect, — and as long as your bags are what you told us, that’s the price you pay, and includes door collection from anywhere in the UK.

⚠ Important note: Airline excess baggage fees shown above are indicative ranges based on publicly available information and change without notice. Most airlines limit checked bags to 21–23kg maximum, with a maximum of 3 bags per passenger. Any item heavier than the airline limit must travel as cargo — which is exactly what we do, from your door. Always verify directly with your airline. Our quoted shipping price holds from the time of booking, as long as your shipment matches what you told us and subject to airline rates at time of booking.

Common mistakes when shipping excess baggage — and how to avoid them

After 28 years and , we know exactly where things go wrong. These are the four mistakes that cause the most problems — and what to do instead.

Underestimating volumetric weight

Airlines and carriers charge whichever is greater — actual weight or the space the bag occupies. A large lightweight suitcase can cost more than a smaller heavy one. Many customers are surprised when their quote is higher than expected because of this.

✓ Fix: Give us your bag measurements when you enquire. We calculate it for you before quoting.
📷
Packing prohibited items without realising

Lithium batteries, aerosols, perfumes, flammable liquids — these are refused across all services. Customers often pack them without thinking. A shipment refused at collection wastes everyone’s time and may cost the deposit.

✓ Fix: Check the restrictions list before packing. If unsure, call us first.
📋
Leaving customs documents to the last minute

For destinations like Australia, the USA and Canada, customs paperwork must be prepared before we collect the goods. Delays receiving paperwork produce origin storage charges and can hold the entire shipment at the port.

✓ Fix: We will tell you exactly what’s needed at booking. Have it ready before collection day.
📦
Paying the airline when shipping is cheaper

Most customers who call us after paying an airline excess fee wish they had called us first. For two or more bags on most international routes, our air freight is cheaper than airline check-in fees — and we collect from your door.

✓ Fix: Get a quote from us before you book extra baggage through your airline.

How we build your quote — no automated guesswork

We don’t use automated instant quotes that round everything up or leave hidden charges for later. Every quote is built from your actual shipment details. Here is what we need from you, and what happens next.

1
Your UK collection postcode

We collect anywhere on the UK mainland — home, workplace or university. Your postcode determines the collection zone and any applicable charges.

2
Where you’re sending

Country and city if possible. This tells us which service options are available, what transit times to expect and whether door-to-door (subject to your destination) is possible for your destination.

3
How many bags and what type

Number of suitcases, boxes or holdalls. Whether you want door-to-door (subject to your destination) or arrival airport. Any oversized or unusual items that need special handling.

4
When you want to ship

Your preferred collection date. We need at least 48–72 hours notice. The earlier you book, the more flexibility we have on routing and timing.

5
Measurements if you have them

Length, width and height of each bag or box. This lets us calculate volumetric weight accurately so your quote reflects the true cost — subject to airline rates at the time of booking.

6
We find your best option

We build your shipment into our system and look across all our carriers — air freight, sea freight, door-to-door (subject to your destination) — to find the best combination of speed, service and price for your specific movement.

⚡ Lithium batteries — what you can check in with your airline vs. what needs specialist handling

This is where many customers get confused. Airlines allow certain lithium battery items in passenger checked baggage — but those same items cannot travel in unaccompanied freight without specialist dangerous goods packaging. If you plan to fly with your device, take it with you on the plane. If you need to ship it separately, call us first.

✓ Passengers can check in with airlines
Laptops (in checked or cabin baggage)
Mobile phones and smartphones
Tablets and e-readers
Smart watches and fitness trackers
Cameras and video cameras
Wireless earbuds and headphones
Electric toothbrushes and shavers
Handheld gaming devices
Bluetooth speakers (small)
Children’s electronic toys
Medical devices (CPAP etc — with airline approval)
⚠ Not permitted in airline checked baggage — but can be shipped as dangerous goods freight
Power banks — cabin only with airlines
Spare & loose lithium batteries — cabin only
E-cigarettes and vapes — cabin only
Cordless power tools — DG freight with MSDS
Hoverboards and e-scooters — DG freight with MSDS
Drones with large batteries — DG freight with MSDS
E-bikes and electric vehicles — DG freight with MSDS
DG freight = specialist dangerous goods packaging with IATA classification. We require the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for the battery or product before we can confirm shipping approval. Call us to discuss.
📦 Need to ship lithium battery items as freight?

We offer specialist dangerous goods packaging for lithium-ion products as a separate service. Items such as power tools, e-bikes, drones and larger battery-powered devices can be shipped as dangerous goods freight by air or sea with correct classification, packaging and labelling.

✈ By air
IATA DGR — International Air Transport Association Dangerous Goods Regulations (ICAO Technical Instructions). UN Class 9 classification, specialist packaging, marking and labelling required.
⚓ By sea
IMDG Code — International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code, published by the IMO (International Maritime Organization). Same UN 3480/3481 classification, SOLAS compliant packaging required.

To obtain shipping approval for either mode we require the MSDS — Material Safety Data Sheet (also referred to as SDS — Safety Data Sheet) for the battery or product. This is usually available from the manufacturer. The same document covers both IATA DG and IMDG requirements. Call us on 0800 096 38 39 to discuss your item before booking.

ⓘ Airline rules on lithium batteries vary by carrier and route. Always check with your airline before travelling. If you are unsure whether your item can be shipped as freight, call us before packing — not after collection.

💡 When luggage shipping beats excess baggage charges

Once you are travelling with 3 or more large suitcases, it almost always becomes more economical — and more convenient — to use a door-to-airport or door-to-door (subject to your destination) luggage shipping service rather than paying airline excess baggage charges. This is especially true on long-haul routes where airline fees escalate fast and your bags can weigh you down through airports, transfers and onward journeys.

We collect from your UK door, handle all documentation, and deliver to the destination cargo warehouse — or direct to your door on selected routes. You fly light. Your bags arrive safely. And you know the price before we collect a single item.

What your UK quote does not cover

⚠ Door-to-Door Services — Destination Charges Not Included

Your UK shipping quote does not include the following destination charges. These are levied by governing bodies and government agencies at the arrival country and are payable by you directly at destination:

Quarantine and biosecurity inspection fees — mandatory government charges, payable per consignment at destination, levied by the arrival country’s quarantine or biosecurity authority (e.g. AQIS in Australia, MPI in New Zealand). Payable per consignment at destination. Not included in your UK quote.
Government inspection fees — charges levied by customs authorities or other governing bodies where your shipment is selected for physical inspection. These are outside our control and not included in your UK quote.
Storage fees — if your shipment is held at the destination warehouse due to customs queries, incorrect documentation, missing tax IDs or failure to respond to inspection notices, storage charges accumulate at your cost. These are payable before your shipment is released.
Customs duties and taxes — any import duties, VAT, GST or local taxes assessed by the destination customs authority on your shipment are payable by you at destination.
Cargo dues and wharfage — mandatory port or airport handling charges levied by the destination authority (e.g. Ad Valorem Wharfage in South Africa, cargo dues in Nigeria). Payable per consignment at destination.

These charges are mandatory, set by the destination country’s governing bodies, and outside our control. We will advise you of known destination charges for your route at the time of booking so you can budget accordingly. If you have questions about what to expect at your destination, call us on 0800 096 38 39 before you book.

Excess baggage shipping — FAQs

What is excess baggage shipping and how is it different from airline baggage?
Excess baggage shipping means sending your bags separately from your flight, as air freight or sea freight, rather than checking them onto the aircraft. We collect from your UK door and deliver to the destination airport or seaport. The main differences: your bags travel independently of you, they arrive at the cargo warehouse (not the baggage carousel), and in most cases the cost is significantly lower than what the airline charges for additional checked bags at check-in.
Is shipping excess baggage actually cheaper than paying the airline? +
For most customers shipping two or more bags, yes — sometimes by a substantial margin. British Airways charges from £65 per extra bag pre-purchased, rising to £100 or more at the airport desk. Emirates and Qatar charge from £60 per kilogram over your allowance. Our air freight rate is confirmed at the point of quote, — and as long as your bags are what you told us, that’s the price you pay, and includes UK door collection. Call us with your destination and bag count and we will give you a comparison on the spot.
How long does excess baggage shipping take? +
By air freight: typically 4–10 working days from UK door collection to arrival airport. By sea freight: 3–12 weeks depending on destination — Nigeria direct is 20–21 days, Canada 10–20 days, Australia 46–68 days. Transit times are estimates and not guaranteed. We always recommend building in extra buffer time during peak periods such as Christmas, Eid and summer holidays when cargo space is in high demand.
What is door-to-door (subject to your destination) excess baggage shipping and where is it available? +
Door-to-door means we collect your bags from your UK address and deliver them directly to your home address abroad, with customs clearance handled along the way. You don’t need to go to any customs office or cargo warehouse at the destination. We offer this service to Australia, the USA, the UAE and Canada (Canada is subject to customs restrictions — the receiver may still need to attend in person). Also available by sea freight to New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Africa and Thailand.
Can I ship personal effects overseas? +
Yes — personal effects are exactly what we ship every day. Clothing, shoes, books, kitchen items, household goods, sports equipment, musical instruments. The sender and receiver must be the same person for the shipment to qualify as personal effects rather than commercial goods. For door-to-door (subject to your destination) air service via our express air partner/our express air partner, only personal effects are accepted — no laptops, no commercial items.
Do you collect from my home? And what are the collection hours? +
Yes, we collect from your home, workplace or university anywhere on the UK mainland. Within the M25: Within M25: Mon–Fri 09:30–16:00 • Outside M25: Mon–Fri 10:00–17:00, Saturday and Sunday 09:00–12:00 with a weekend surcharge (Greater London only, subject to availability) plus the item collection fee. Within M25: Mon–Fri 09:30–16:00 • Outside M25: Mon–Fri 10:00–17:00, no standard weekend collections. Scottish Highlands and Northern Ireland attract a higher collection fee. Book at least 48–72 hours before your required date. If your items are above the second floor and there is no lift, please tell us at booking — a secondary collection person is required and chargeable.
Is there a booking deposit? +
Yes — a £75.00 non-refundable deposit is required to confirm your booking and secure your collection date. This is not an additional charge on top of your quote. It is offset against your total shipping charge when we invoice for the full amount after collection.
What happens if my plans change after booking? +
Contact us as early as possible. All cancellations must be advised at least 48–72 hours before your collection date. Once the luggage or cargo has been collected, 100% of the quoted charges apply. If you cancel on the day of collection once our driver is at your door, 95% of the quoted charges apply — plus any airline or carrier retrieval charges that have already been incurred. The £75 deposit is non-refundable in all circumstances. We understand plans change — the sooner you let us know, the less it costs you.
How much does excess baggage shipping cost compared to airline fees?+
Airlines charge significant fees per excess bag at check-in — set at the check-in desk or gate when you have no alternative. We’ll send you a written quote before we collect anything. As long as your bags are what you told us, that’s the price you pay — subject to airline rates at the time of booking. Airline rates may change, subject to space and availability, so if that affects your quote we’ll let you know before you commit. For 2+ bags on long-haul routes, we are usually cheaper. For one bag on short-haul, airline fees may be comparable or cheaper if included in the fare. Call 0800 096 38 39 with your route and bag count for an immediate comparison.
Can I avoid excess baggage fees completely by shipping ahead?+
Yes — this is exactly what most customers do. Book your shipment 10–14 days before you travel, fly with hand luggage only (or your included allowance), and collect your bags from the destination cargo warehouse. You avoid check-in queues, baggage reclaim, and the stress of overweight bags at the check-in desk or gate. thousands of customers have done this with us since 1998.
