Prohibited Items for International Shipping
What cannot go in your bags — air freight and sea freight

The prohibited items list exists because certain goods pose a risk in freight environments — fire, chemical reaction, pressure change at altitude. Most are obvious once explained. Here is the complete list for our services.

The key principle

The prohibited items list exists because certain goods pose a risk in freight environments — fire, chemical reaction, pressure change at altitude. Most are obvious once explained. Here is the complete list for our services. Excess Luggage Co. has been shipping personal effects internationally since 1998. Call us on 0800 096 38 39 for advice specific to your situation before you commit to anything.

What we need from you

Your UK collection postcode, destination country, number of items and collection date. We give you a clear quote straight away. No obligation, no pressure.

What we find most often

These are the items we actually find in shipments — nearly always packed by people who had no idea they were a problem.

The rules are generally the same restrictions that apply when you travel with an airline yourself. They are governed by IATA regulations for air freight and IMDG regulations for sea freight. If you are unsure whether an item can be shipped, always ask before you pack it — it is a two-minute phone call, and it is free.

A declaration is not a substitute for checking

Even when a customer completes a Dangerous Goods declaration, prohibited items are still occasionally discovered during X-ray screening or physical inspection. We comply with the UK aviation and maritime security act and regulations. Failure to do so can result in significant penalties, fines, or prosecution under applicable transport and customs laws — and it can delay or stop your shipment.

Why we take this seriously

Our responsibility is not only to protect your belongings. It extends to airline staff, carriers, customs authorities, and the passengers travelling on the aircraft carrying your shipment. A power bank in a box of clothes is not a paperwork problem. It is a fire risk at 38,000 feet.
