LCL Sea Freight Personal Effects Shipping from the UK

Less than Container Load (LCL) sea freight — the most economical way to ship personal effects and household goods from the UK. Pay only for the space your goods occupy. 185 destinations worldwide.

Less than Container Load (LCL) explained

LCL — the smart choice for most personal effects shipments

LCL stands for Less than Container Load. It is a sea freight method where your personal effects and household goods are consolidated with other shippers' cargo in a shared container — you pay only for the cubic metre (CBM) space your goods actually occupy, rather than for an entire container.

LCL sea freight is the most economical method for shipping personal effects and household goods internationally from the UK when you have more than 10 bags or boxes but do not need a full container. It is the standard method used by individuals, families, and relocators shipping partial household contents.

One cubic metre (CBM) of LCL sea freight holds approximately 11 standard removal boxes. A typical family's personal effects shipment of 20-30 boxes occupies approximately 2-3 CBM — well within the LCL range.

LCL key facts

How LCL is charged

LCL sea freight is charged per cubic metre (CBM). One CBM = 1m × 1m × 1m. A standard removal box (approximately 45cm × 45cm × 45cm) = 0.09 CBM. Minimum charge usually applies — typically 1 CBM.

The LCL sea freight process from the UK

  1. Book and get your LCL quote

Tell us your UK collection postcode, destination, and estimated volume in boxes. We calculate the CBM and provide a full LCL sea freight quote.

  2. Door collection from your UK address

We collect your personal effects from your home, office, or student accommodation across the UK and transport them to our consolidation warehouse.

  3. Consolidation at UK port

Your goods are consolidated with other LCL shippers' cargo into a shared container at a UK port — typically Felixstowe, Southampton, or Tilbury.

  4. Sea transit

The container is sealed and shipped by sea. Transit takes 6-12 weeks depending on destination. We provide a Bill of Lading (B/L) as the contract of carriage.

  5. Deconsolidation at destination port

On arrival, the container is deconsolidated and your personal effects are separated. This adds a few days compared to FCL but keeps costs significantly lower.

  6. Customs clearance and delivery

Your goods are cleared through destination customs — we advise on documentation required. Door-to-door delivery where available.

Common questions answered

What does LCL mean in shipping?+
LCL stands for Less than Container Load. It is a sea freight method where your personal effects are consolidated with other shippers' cargo in a shared container. You pay only for the cubic metre (CBM) space your goods occupy, rather than for an entire container. LCL is the most economical sea freight option for partial household moves and personal effects shipments.
How is LCL sea freight charged?+
LCL sea freight is charged per cubic metre (CBM). One CBM = 1 metre × 1 metre × 1 metre. A standard removal box (approximately 45cm × 45cm × 45cm) occupies approximately 0.09 CBM — roughly 11 boxes per CBM. A minimum charge of 1 CBM typically applies. We calculate your CBM at booking and provide a full quote.
How long does LCL sea freight take from the UK?+
LCL sea freight from the UK takes approximately 8-12 weeks to the UAE, India, Pakistan, and Canada; 8-12 weeks to Nigeria, Ghana, and East Africa; and 8-12 weeks to Australia, New Zealand, and China. These sea transit times are approximate — the actual time depends on when your LCL container finishes loading and consolidating, the vessel’s sailing date and route, any transhipment hub before the final destination, and customs clearance, so please allow a week or two either side. LCL typically takes slightly longer than FCL due to consolidation and deconsolidation at each end.
What is the difference between LCL and FCL sea freight?+
LCL (Less than Container Load) is a shared container where you pay per cubic metre — ideal for volumes under about 15 CBM. FCL (Full Container Load) is a dedicated container for your shipment alone — more economical for larger volumes above 15 CBM and offers faster transit and lower handling risk. For most personal effects shipments, LCL is the right choice.
Can I ship household furniture by LCL from the UK?+
Yes. Household furniture, kitchen equipment, and large personal effects items can be shipped by LCL sea freight. For very large or awkward furniture pieces, FCL may be more suitable — we advise at booking. LCL is ideal for mixed shipments of boxes, bags, and smaller furniture items.
Is LCL sea freight cheaper than air cargo?+
Yes — significantly for larger volumes. For 10 or more boxes of personal effects, LCL sea freight is typically 60-80% less expensive than air cargo per cubic metre. For smaller volumes of 1-5 bags or boxes where speed matters, air cargo is more practical. LCL is the most economical method for relocating families and larger household shipments.
