Box requirements

What boxes work for international shipping

Collection hours — UK mainland: Within M25: Mon–Fri 09:30–16:00 • Outside M25: Mon–Fri 10:00–17:00. Weekend collections applicable within Greater London only, subject to availability and surcharge. No weekend collections outside Greater London.

Barrels & oversized items: Barrel shipments — commonly used for Caribbean and West African routes — are subject to a handling surcharge due to their size and weight. Please advise at enquiry stage if shipping barrels so we can confirm the correct charge before booking.

Double-walled cardboard boxes — these are the standard for international air freight. Single-wall boxes compress and fail in transit. Available from any removal or packaging supplier.

Standard weight: 30kg (surcharge if heavier) per box. We recommend staying under 25kg to keep the box manageable at the destination end. Items over 30kg, or where length, width and height added together exceed 200cm, are still accepted but attract a heavy-item surcharge for the extra handling — advise us at the enquiry stage.

Label each box clearly with your name, UK address (origin) and full destination address. Add the Air Waybill reference on collection day — we provide this.

No lithium batteries in any box. Batteries can be packed and exported as declared dangerous goods — ask us. No aerosols or perfumes. Sender and receiver must be the same person for personal effects classification.

No bin liners or plastic bags — these are not structurally suitable and will be refused at collection.

How many boxes can I ship overseas?−
No strict limit on number of boxes. Each box has a 30kg standard (surcharge if heavier). Tell us the number of boxes, approximate dimensions and weight at quote stage. We calculate the quote.
Is shipping boxes cheaper than using a courier service like DHL?+
For multiple boxes going to the same destination, air freight through Excess Luggage Co. is almost always cheaper than commercial courier rates. Couriers charge per parcel. We charge for the consignment as a whole. Call us on {PHONE} with your box count and destination for a quote.
What should I put in each box for the packing list?+
Every item in every box needs to be listed separately with a declared value. You can group small items: “20 x books — £100 total”, “5 x clothing items — £150 total”. Be specific enough that customs can identify the contents without opening the box.
