What Can’t I Put
in a Luggage Shipment?

Most personal items can be shipped without issue. But a small number of items cause problems at customs or with the freight carrier — and some cannot be shipped at all. Here is the definitive guide from 28 years of experience.

Absolute no-gos

Items that cannot be shipped on any service

Lithium batteries — remove from ALL devices before packing. This applies to every service: air freight, sea freight and courier. Lithium batteries are a fire risk in cargo holds. Remove them from laptops, phones, tablets, power banks, e-cigarettes, cameras, electric shavers and any other device before packing. Devices can travel — the batteries cannot. This is not our rule — it is IATA aviation regulation.
Aerosols and pressurised containers. Deodorants, hairspray, spray paint, compressed air cans. Any pressurised container. Remove before packing — even if apparently nearly empty.
Perfumes and colognes. Flammable liquids. Remove from the shipment. Perfume bottles can be packed in checked luggage on a flight; they cannot go in freight cargo.
Explosives, firearms and ammunition. No exceptions.
Perishable food items. Fresh food, meat, dairy, live plants and seeds cause DAFF/MPI biosecurity holds in Australia and New Zealand and customs issues in most other destinations. Leave them out.
Destination-specific restrictions

Items restricted at certain destinations

ItemRestriction
Alcohol (wine, spirits)Strictly prohibited for all Gulf state destinations (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman). Permitted for most other destinations in personal quantities.
Pork and pork productsProhibited for Gulf states and Malaysia. Do not ship food items generally.
VPN hardware, certain electronicsChina has restrictions on certain electronic devices and political material.
Prescription medicationJapan requires advance notification for certain prescription medicines. Always carry medication with you rather than shipping it.
Used outdoor gear (boots, sports equipment)Australia and New Zealand DAFF/MPI biosecurity — clean thoroughly, remove all soil. Failure to declare can result in seizure and significant fines.
Religious or political materialCertain Gulf states restrict material deemed contrary to local law or culture. Advise at enquiry if relevant.
The practical rule

If you are not sure, ask before you pack

A 5-minute call before packing prevents a customs hold at the destination that can last days and incur local storage charges. Call us on 0800 096 38 39 with your destination and a list of anything you are unsure about — we will tell you immediately.

The items that cause the most problems in practice: lithium batteries left inside devices (most common mistake by far), alcohol in Gulf state shipments (particularly wine), and undeclared food items in Australian and New Zealand shipments. These three account for the vast majority of customs holds we have seen over 28 years.

💡 The battery question gets asked every week

“Can I leave the battery in my laptop?” No. Remove it, carry it with you on the flight. The laptop body can travel in the shipment. Same applies to phones, tablets and power banks. This is not negotiable — it is IATA aviation safety regulation that applies to every freight carrier worldwide.

FAQs

Prohibited items questions answered

Can I ship a laptop if I remove the battery?
Yes — the laptop body without the battery can travel in an air freight shipment. The battery must be carried with you as cabin baggage on your flight. This applies to phones, tablets, power banks, cameras and any other lithium battery-powered device.
Can I ship wine or spirits in my luggage shipment?+
For most destinations yes, in reasonable personal quantities. For Gulf state destinations (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman) — absolutely not. No alcohol of any kind. This is a legal prohibition in those countries, not a carrier policy.
Can I ship food in my luggage shipment?+
Fresh, perishable or organic food should not be shipped. Tinned, sealed, commercially packaged food is generally acceptable for most destinations. For Australia and New Zealand, declare all food items — undeclared food triggers DAFF/MPI biosecurity action.
What about prescription medication?+
Carry medication with you rather than shipping it. Some countries — Japan in particular — have strict entry requirements for certain prescription medicines. Never put medication in a freight shipment.
What happens if a prohibited item is found?+
The item may be seized and destroyed, or the entire shipment may be held pending inspection. Seizure costs, storage fees and inspection charges are payable by the shipper. This is why we ask about contents at booking stage — prevention is far cheaper than resolution.
