How to prepare a bicycle for international air freight

Airlines and freight carriers require bicycles to be partially disassembled and properly packaged. A specialist bike box (available from most bike shops) is the minimum requirement.

Collection hours — UK mainland: Within M25: Mon–Fri 09:30–16:00 • Outside M25: Mon–Fri 10:00–17:00. Weekend collections applicable within Greater London only, subject to availability and surcharge. No weekend collections outside Greater London.

Barrels & oversized items: Barrel shipments — commonly used for Caribbean and West African routes — are subject to a handling surcharge due to their size and weight. Please advise at enquiry stage if shipping barrels so we can confirm the correct charge before booking.

Bike box (cardboard or hard case) — remove pedals, turn handlebars parallel to frame, deflate tyres. Wrap frame in bubble wrap. Pad all contact points.

Declare the bicycle on your packing list with make, model and declared value. Carbon frames and high-value components should be listed separately.

Volumetric weight typically applies to bicycles — a bike box is large even if the bicycle is light. We calculate volumetric weight at quote stage so you can budget for them.

No lithium batteries — remove e-bike batteries before shipping. Batteries can be packed and exported as declared dangerous goods — ask us. Lithium batteries cannot travel by air freight on any service.

Can I ship an e-bike overseas?+

Yes, we can help ship your e-bike overseas. In most cases, the bike and battery must be shipped separately. The lithium-ion battery can often be removed and packed for Dangerous Goods (DG) transport. To assess the shipping options available, please provide the battery’s MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). As lithium-ion batteries are subject to strict hazardous materials regulations, additional handling and documentation requirements may apply. Once we have reviewed the battery specifications, we can advise on the best shipping solution.
