Shipping to Northern Mariana Islands

Northern Mariana Islands is a British Overseas Territory in the North Atlantic, and one of the destinations we are asked about most by UK customers relocating for work in insurance, reinsurance and finance.

Air freight

Air is the right choice for smaller consignments and anything you need soon — suitcases, boxes, the things you cannot be without. Typically around 4 to 10 working days from collection, routing to L.F. Wade International Airport (BDA). 30kg per item standard, surcharge if heavier.

Sea freight

Sea becomes the sensible choice once the volume grows — a household rather than a few bags. Typically around 4 to 10 weeks, routing to Hamilton. It is slower, and for larger consignments it is the honest answer.

How you are charged

On actual or volumetric weight, whichever is greater. Volumetric is length × width × height in cm divided by 6000, so a box of bedding prices on the room it takes, not what it weighs. Dismantle and flat-pack anything you can. Minimum chargeable weight is 25kg on most services, 45kg on some — we tell you which applies before you book.

Customs — what actually applies to Northern Mariana Islands

The Northern Mariana Islands are a US Commonwealth but sit outside the United States customs territory, so they set their own import duty rather than clearing like the US mainland.

We handle your UK customs export entry. Import clearance, and any duty or tax at the other end, is the responsibility of the importer or consignee. We will tell you what to expect before you book rather than after you have paid.

The paperwork that decides whether it moves

Every personal effects, excess luggage and student shipping consignment must travel with a valued packing list and a photocopy of the consignee’s passport. Not a rough list — an itemised one, with honest values. This is the single most common reason a shipment sits waiting at the destination, and it is entirely avoidable.

Because Northern Mariana Islands sits alone in the Atlantic rather than in a shipping cluster, sailings are less frequent than to a mainland port. If you are working to a date, tell us early and we will be straight with you about what is achievable.

Charges at the other end

On a door-to-airport or door-to-port service, the consignee may face destination handling, customs clearance, storage and collection charges at arrival. On sea freight there can also be de-stuffing and terminal handling. These are levied at the destination, not by us — but you should know they exist before you ship, not when someone calls you asking for money. Ask us and we will tell you what is typical for Northern Mariana Islands.

Packing for Northern Mariana Islands

Your shipment is handled many times by people who cannot see inside the box. The most common mistake we see is packaging never designed for international transport — single-wall storage boxes, plastic crates, canvas bags, bin liners. None of it survives properly.

Use double-wall shipping cartons made for international transport; we can supply them. Label every carton with your surname and the arrival address, tape all seams, and fill empty space so the box cannot collapse under load. For anything fragile or high value we build purpose-made timber crates in-house. See our packing guide and the prohibited items list before you start.

FAQs

Luggage shipping to Northern Mariana Islands — FAQs

How long does shipping to Northern Mariana Islands take?+
Air freight typically takes around 4 to 10 working days from collection to arrival, depending on routing. Sea freight typically takes around 4 to 10 weeks. These sea transit times are approximate — the actual time depends on when your LCL container finishes loading and consolidating, the vessel’s sailing date and route, any transhipment hub before the final destination, and customs clearance, so please allow a week or two either side. We will give you realistic timings for your shipment when we quote — not best-case ones.
What paperwork do I need for Northern Mariana Islands?+
Every personal effects, excess luggage and student shipping consignment must travel with a valued packing list and a photocopy of the consignee’s passport. We handle your UK customs export entry. Will I pay duty on my belongings in Northern Mariana Islands?+
Northern Mariana Islands is British, but it is not part of the UK for customs purposes. It sets its own import duty, and duty is assessed on arrival by H.M. Customs Northern Mariana Islands. Is there a weight limit per item?+
Yes — a maximum of 30kg per item for personal effects, so it can be handled safely at every stage of the journey. There is also a minimum chargeable weight: most luggage shipping services are based on a 25kg minimum, and some services operate on a 45kg minimum. We tell you which applies before you book.
What can I not send?+
The restrictions are broadly the same as travelling with an airline. The items we find most often are mobile phones, power banks, vapes and e-cigarettes, electric scooters, flammable aerosols, nail varnish and perfumes. Dangerous goods are governed by IATA rules for air and IMDG rules for sea. If you are unsure about something, ask us before you pack it.

Yes — we collect from any UK address. Within the M25 collections run Within M25: Mon–Fri 09:30–16:00 • Outside M25: Mon–Fri 10:00–17:00. It does not have to be you at the door; someone else can hand the shipment over on your behalf.
