Can I ship a bicycle?

Shipping bicycles internationally from the UK

Yes — we ship bicycles internationally. Road bikes, mountain bikes, touring bikes and e-bikes (with battery considerations) are all accepted. The key requirements: the bicycle must be properly boxed, and any lithium battery from an e-bike must be removed and is not shippable by air freight.

🚲
Bicycle must be in a box. Bikes cannot travel loose. A standard bike box (typically 140cm × 80cm × 25cm for a road bike) is required. Bike shops often supply these free or cheaply. We can advise on dimensions at booking.

Air freight to 185 destinations. 4–10 working days, subject to space and flight availability with the carriers. The boxed bicycle travels as cargo — not as airline hold luggage. You collect from the destination cargo warehouse.

What airlines charge

Airline bicycle fees vs shipping with us

Airlines treat bicycles as oversized sports equipment — charged separately, subject to space availability, and priced at the check-in desk or gate where you have no alternative.

Airline Bicycle fee (each way) Max dimensions
British Airwayssignificant fees190cm linear, 30kg
Emiratessignificant fees300cm linear, 32kg
Ryanairsignificant feesMust be in a bag or box
easyJetsignificant feesMax 20kg — bikes often refused

For a return cycling trip or relocation, airline fees each way add up fast. Shipping the bicycle separately means you fly light, avoid check-in stress, and have a quote.

Packing your bicycle

How to box a bicycle for international shipping

Proper boxing is the most important step. A well-boxed bicycle ships safely. A poorly packaged one risks damage in transit.

Get a proper bike box. Most local bike shops will give you a cardboard bike box free — call ahead. Cardboard bike boxes are ideal. Hard-sided flight cases also work but cost more to ship due to weight.
Remove pedals and lower the saddle. Both pedals must come off — they are left-hand thread on the left, right-hand on the right. Lower the saddle and seatpost to fit the box. Handlebars may need to be turned parallel to the frame.
Remove the front wheel. The front wheel comes off and sits alongside the frame in the box. Protect the disc rotors with cardboard sleeves if applicable. Use a fork protector insert.
Deflate tyres slightly. Reduce tyre pressure by about 30% to allow for pressure changes in the aircraft cargo hold. Fully deflating is not necessary.
E-bike batteries CANNOT be shipped by air freight. Lithium batteries are prohibited in air freight under IATA regulations. The e-bike frame and components ship fine — the battery must be left behind or carried separately by other means.

FAQs

Your questions answered

Can I ship an e-bike internationally?
The e-bike frame, wheels and components can all be shipped by air freight. However, the lithium battery cannot — it is prohibited in air freight under IATA aviation regulations. The battery must be removed before collection. If you cannot transport the battery separately, please call us on 0800 096 38 39 to discuss sea freight options which have different battery rules.
Does the bicycle need to be boxed?+
Yes — bicycles must be in a box or hard case for air freight shipping. Loose bicycles are not accepted. Most bike shops supply cardboard bike boxes for free or a small charge. Call us before booking and we advise on the correct box dimensions for your bicycle type.
How much does it cost to ship a bicycle internationally?+
Cost depends on the boxed dimensions and weight, your UK postcode and destination. A typical road bike in a cardboard box weighs 12–16kg. Call 0800 096 38 39 for an immediate clear quote for your specific route.
How long does bicycle shipping take?+
Air freight from UK door to destination cargo warehouse takes 4–10 working days depending on the destination. For cycling trips, we recommend booking at least 14 working days ahead of your arrival date to allow for customs clearance at the destination.
Can I ship a mountain bike?+
Yes — mountain bikes are shipped regularly. MTBs are typically larger than road bikes — measure your boxed dimensions carefully and advise us at booking. Wider bars may need to be removed. Tyres can remain inflated to about 70% of normal pressure.
What happens at the destination — do you deliver to my accommodation?+
You collect from the destination cargo warehouse with your passport and Air Waybill reference. This is standard for air freight personal effects. For door delivery to accommodation, please ask at booking — options vary by destination.
