Airline fees vs shipping

What airlines charge for sports equipment — and why shipping wins

Sports equipment is almost always charged separately by airlines as an oversized or specialist item. Fees are set at the check-in desk or gate where you have no alternative — and space is not guaranteed.

Airlines charge significant fees each way for sports equipment items — surfboards, skis, golf clubs, bikes. The exact fee depends on the airline, the route, and whether you have pre-booked. Gate prices are always higher than pre-booked prices.
Space is not guaranteed. Airlines may refuse bulky sports items on busy routes even if you have pre-paid. You can arrive at the check-in desk with a surfboard and be told there is no space.
We give you a quote before collection. No excess-baggage fees at the check-in desk or gate. No risk of refusal. Your equipment is booked into the freight system and will travel regardless of how busy the flight is.
Fly light — collect at destination. You fly with hand luggage only, your sports gear ships ahead. For surf trips, ski holidays and sports tours, this is the most stress-free approach.
28 years experience

Sports equipment shipping — why customers choose Excess Luggage Co.

From cricket teams shipping kit to the Caribbean and India, to golfers sending clubs ahead to South Africa and Portugal, to surfers shipping boards to Indonesia and Portugal — we have shipped specialist sports equipment on virtually every route we operate, for 28 years.

The key advantages over parcel couriers for sports equipment: we handle oversized items that standard couriers refuse, we know the customs documentation requirements by destination, and we give you a clear quote before collection — not a base rate with surcharges added later.

FAQs

Your questions answered

What sports equipment can you ship internationally?
We ship golf clubs, bicycles, surfboards, ski gear and snowboards, cricket equipment, tennis and squash rackets, scuba diving kit (wetsuit, BCD, regulator — not compressed tanks), and most other sports equipment. Call 0800 096 38 39 with your specific item and destination for immediate advice.
Can I ship a surfboard internationally?+
Yes — surfboards are accepted in a surfboard travel bag. The bag must be padded — wrap the nose, tail and rails with foam. Declare the length and weight at booking. Popular surfboard routes include UK to Portugal, Indonesia, Morocco, Barbados and the Canary Islands.
Can I ship ski equipment?+
Yes — skis, snowboards, boots and poles in a ski bag are accepted. Skis and boots can travel in the same bag up to 30kg. Popular routes include UK to France, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Canada. Book at least 10 working days before your trip.
Is there a maximum size for sports equipment?+
Each item must weigh no more than 30kg. For oversized items — very long surfboards, kayaks, paddleboards — call us on 0800 096 38 39 before booking. Some oversized items require specialist freight routing.
Can I ship cricket equipment to India or Pakistan?+
Yes — cricket equipment to India, Pakistan, the Caribbean and Sri Lanka is one of our established routes. A full cricket kit bag with bat, pads, helmet, gloves and accessories typically weighs 8–15kg. Call us for a quote for your specific destination.
Why can't I ship compressed air tanks for diving?+
Compressed gas in any form — scuba tanks, compressed air cylinders — is prohibited in air freight under IATA dangerous goods regulations. The tank must be empty and the valve open to be considered for shipping. Regulators, BCDs, wetsuits and fins are all fine.
